Prince Harry may decline any offer to meet with King Charles during his upcoming UK visit — not out of hostility, but out of a calculated desire to protect both the Invictus Games and his father from the media storm such a meeting would unleash, royal commentators say.
John McDermott, royal expert and co-host of the Palace Intrigue podcast, told Sky News Australia that the optics of a Harry-Charles meeting would overwhelm everything else. ‘It would have overshadowed the purpose of the King’s official trip and shifted the headlines away from the events he was there to undertake,’ McDermott said.
The key indicator to watch, McDermott explained, is whether Harry makes any public signal about wanting to see his father versus staying silent. ‘If Harry truly wants a meeting, we would likely hear something from his camp first. The absence of any such signal could tell us a lot about where things stand.’
McDermott said Harry’s clear priority during the UK trip is Invictus — the charitable foundation he founded to support wounded veterans through sport — and that any royal family drama risks undermining the Games’ message. ‘The frenzy of a father-son meeting would become the story, and that is precisely what Harry would want to avoid,’ he added.
