While some observers have speculated that Meghan Markle’s planned trip to the United Kingdom alongside Prince Harry is partly motivated by her growing business interests in Europe, royal experts say the reality is more straightforward: this visit is about Harry, and it is about Invictus.
John McDermott, host of the Palace Intrigue podcast and co-founder of Caloroga Media, told Sky News Australia that Meghan’s presence should be read primarily as spousal support rather than strategic positioning. ‘For Harry, this priority is Invictus. That is the reason for the visit, and it is a cause he has remained deeply committed to,’ McDermott said.
‘Meghan is there to support her husband,’ McDermott continued. ‘That does not mean she will not have her own agenda items or meetings while in the UK — it would be surprising if she did not — but the framing of this as a business trip misses the point. Invictus comes first.’
McDermott acknowledged that Meghan’s lifestyle brand and various media projects have created opportunities that a UK visit could advance, but cautioned against reading too much strategy into a trip rooted in a long-standing charitable commitment. The Invictus Games, which Harry founded in 2014 to support wounded veterans through sport, remains one of the couple’s most unambiguous public interests.
